iRecycle Program – 11th Container
June 4, 2014, Harmon, GU – The Guam Business Partners for Recycling, under the project i*recycle, is disbursing $33,290.00 to participating schools for their aluminum can recycling efforts. Since the program started in 2007, the program has generated up to $200,000 in funds for participating schools.
The i*recycle program continues to educate the community on the importance of recycling aluminum cans throughout the island. With more than forty satellite aluminum recycling bins stationed at public, private and DODEA schools, i*recycle efforts are also seen at village fiestas, sporting events, private businesses and at the annual Liberation Day Carnival. Peggy Denney, Program Administrator, organizes an army of volunteers who assist in the continuing effort to educate the community on the need for recycling.
“We continue to import over 80 million aluminum cans a year to Guam and yet we are only seeing a fraction of those cans being collected for the i*recycle program,” Denney said. “Our community needs to pull together so we can do so much more. I continue to thank the schools for encouraging our families to collect aluminum cans at home, at family parties and at work.
“By continuing to encourage this type of community involvement we make greater progress towards recycling 100% of the cans we generate. Awareness of the benefits of recycling continues to grow through the support of our business and community partners. As a community we are taking steps to start sorting our trash for not only aluminum, but for paper, cardboard, plastic and glass. We are proud of our participating schools and encourage them to continue setting the example for all to protect our beautiful island home.”
Proceeds from the sale of aluminum cans are divided proportionally among the schools where the cans are collected. This week’s disbursements were determined by the volume of cans each school had collected.
Top-earning schools from i*recycle Program’s 11th container are as follows:
John F. Kennedy High School – $2,808.00
